Sowing should initially take place for 2–4 weeks at temperatures of approximately 18–22 °C and should be kept well moist. A cold period of 4–6 weeks at -4 to +4 °C is then required to promote germination. After this period, the temperature should remain at 5–12 °C until germination is complete.

A partially shaded to shady location with well-drained, humus-rich soil is optimal. After flowering, the dead stems can be removed. The plant is hardy and requires no additional protection during the cold season.
