Permanent planting on the balcony

If you don't want to replant your balcony every year, permanent planting with perennials and shrubs is the solution. Most perennials also grow in containers.

Easy-care floral splendor

With the exception of tall species, which require support even in the flowerbed, almost all perennials are suitable for container cultivation. Small-growing woody plants find sufficient space in larger containers. In recent years, truly dwarf varieties of many species have been bred, which not only fit into today's tight gardens, but are also specifically suited to container cultivation. Unlike traditional seasonal planting, however, conventional window boxes are less commonly used here, as they offer too little space for the perennials and woody plants in the long run for their extensive root systems. Perennials are usually planted individually or at most in groups of three in sufficiently large pots where they can develop well. However, just as in the flowerbed, most perennials must be removed and divided after a few years; otherwise, they will become senescent and no longer bloom satisfactorily. In containers, this is necessary every two years for most species. However, you will notice for yourself when the plants' flowering performance decreases or simply grow too large for the pot. Many perennials, especially those with striking, ornamental foliage, can be planted particularly well in shady locations. Hostas are ideal container plants for shade. Varieties with white or yellow variegated leaves also add color and brightness to dark corners. Small groups of containers with different varieties look particularly beautiful, but large individual specimens are also very effective. Delicate astilbes and grasses are a good counterbalance to these rather robust plants.

Woody plants

There is a wide selection of woody plants. As already mentioned, smaller and smaller varieties are being bred that can also be permanently grown in containers. You can create a container garden for your patio with something in bloom all year round. Evergreens should also not be forgotten, such as holly (Ilex aquifolium), cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), or sweet fragrant osmanthus (Osmanthus heterophyllus). Dwarf conifers, with their often bizarre shapes and unusual needle colors, are often difficult to integrate in beds. In decorative containers in prominent positions on the patio, however, they become eye-catchers, especially in winter. Creeping and upright varieties can be combined well. Boxwood is one of the most popular container plants; it is usually pruned into strict shapes and takes on the role of a living sculpture. Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium and L. obtusum) can also be pruned into strict shapes that look great in containers.

Flowering and fruit-bearing trees

The Mediterranean snowball blooms as early as early spring, bearing blue berries in late summer (pictured right). It is only hardy in wine-growing climates. The snow forsythia blooms from March onwards, producing pink flowers similar in shape to those of the forsythia. With a height of 1–1.5 m, it will thrive in a spacious container even for the long term. Among the rhododendrons and azaleas, there are numerous compact varieties suitable for container cultivation. Especially in areas with calcareous soil, you can create optimal conditions for them in a container with special substrate. Hydrangeas are often offered as pot plants for the home and can later be cultivated outdoors if given a larger container. In recent years, several dwarf forsythia varieties have come onto the market that grow no taller than 1 m, making them ideal for life in a container. You don't have to miss out on the scent of lilacs on your patio either. Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' grows no higher than 1 m and adorns itself with deliciously fragrant flowers at the end of May.

Standard roses, available in stem heights from 60 cm to 1.4 m, look attractive in containers. Soft-stemmed rambler roses or small shrub roses are usually grafted onto the stems, which then hang loosely. Hybrid tea roses are also grafted onto standard roses, but they appear somewhat stiffer. In addition to standard roses, miniature roses and small shrub roses, which have a slightly arching habit, are suitable for containers. Low-growing ground-cover roses, on the other hand, are ideal for planting on parapets, where they allow their long shoots to grow.

Dream couple roses and clematis

In the garden, on trellises and pergolas, the combination of roses and clematis is one of the most popular motifs. While both extremely attractive on their own, their beauty together is hard to surpass. On the terrace, they can be placed against a pergola and transform any seating area into a romantic arbor. But even if you don't have a pergola and only have limited space, you don't have to miss out on this dream pair. Since plant breeding has also been successful in this area, you can choose from both low-growing climbing roses and slow-growing clematis, which can even fit together in a container. The so-called mini-climbers do not grow taller than 2 m, although they take several years to reach this height. With targeted pruning, they can be kept even smaller. The Danish company Poulsen is particularly committed to this field and has launched an entire series of mini-climbers that bloom in a wide variety of colors. The 'Open Arms' variety is particularly beautiful, with its small, lightly double flowers a bright pink and dark, very healthy foliage. Suitable clematis species and varieties are easy to find in the extensive range. Here, too, many slow-growing varieties have come onto the market in recent years, bred with container use in mind. Representative of these are the two varieties 'Königskind' (blue-flowering) and 'Königskind Rosa', which have the right proportions for covering mini climbers. Another interesting new addition is the yellow-flowering 'My Angel' variety, which is related to Clematis tangutica and only blooms in late summer, when the rose bloom gradually weakens. The flowers of this clematis are shaped like hanging bells, from which feathery seed clusters form, which also have a high ornamental value. Varieties of Clematis alpina bloom as early as spring and can be kept in check by pruning. Metal obelisks, available in a wide variety of designs from specialist retailers, are particularly attractive as climbing supports for roses and clematis.
