Sunflowers – radiantly beautiful

Their enormous heads sway elegantly in the breeze; sunflowers bring joy not only to gardeners. They symbolize the radiance of a beautiful summer and bring vibrant yellow into the home. The Incas and Aztecs already worshipped sunflowers; the priestesses of their sun temples were crowned with sunflowers as a sign of this veneration.

Following the sun…

In the garden and in the field, sunflowers grow up to three meters tall. There are also giant varieties like the 'American Giants,' which grow up to 4.8 meters tall, and dwarf varieties that are only 20 to 30 cm tall. Their colors range from bright yellow to orange to red-yellow flamed flowers. The petals shine like sunbeams, and no matter the variety, sunflowers bloom continuously from July to October. The botanical name Helianthus alone reveals what an extraordinary plant this is: Helios means "sun" and Anthos means "flower." All varieties have one other characteristic in common: As long as they are not yet in bloom, the bud and leaves always face the sunlight. This is why, for example, they are also called "Tournesol" (German: "turning towards the sun") in France. The bud and leaves follow the sun from east to west and return to their original position facing east at dawn. The movements occur primarily through the bending and stretching of the petiole and midrib. This property is called "heliotropism." Once the flowers open, they always point in the same direction.

Long-lasting joy – the best care tips

Regardless of whether you cut the sunflower short or leave it long, always cut the stems diagonally with a sharp knife. Also, remove the lower leaves, or leave only those that are necessary for decorative purposes. The large leaf surfaces contribute to premature wilting, as a lot of water evaporates through them. Change the water (lukewarm is best) every one to two days and recut the flowers as soon as the stem ends turn brown. Avoid placing the stems in boiling water: the scalded plant parts decompose more quickly and the flower wilts faster. Due to the strong sunlight, glass vases accelerate the growth of bacteria, so it's better to choose a ceramic vase or something like a milk jug. Tip: Sunflowers prefer a draft-free, bright, but not sunny spot. Sunflowers naturally last for about a week; with good care, you may be able to get two or three more days out of them.

Magnificent

Sadly, summer is finally saying goodbye for this year, but the majestic bloom of the sunflower captures the last rays of sunshine and lets them shine a little longer in the house. And not just as a solo artist in a vase; they also enjoy combining with grasses, daisies, and other autumn flowers. We celebrate the farewell to summer with a huge wildflower bouquet. If the flower is very large, one to three sunflowers are enough. If it's smaller, a few more are fine. Broken or shortened heads can also be placed individually or in larger quantities in small vases or shallow bowls.

Fresh from the field

Many farmers offer flowers for cutting your own in their fields. Depending on the season, there are lilies, gladioli, dahlias, or sunflowers; a great experience for the whole family. You can browse the fields, selecting and cutting your own flowers. These are inexpensive and always fresh, so they last a long time. You can also be sure that they haven't been shipped halfway around the world just to end up in your vase. Payment is made at small cash registers set up at the edges of the fields. There you will also find a knife for cutting the flowers – so you can always stop by a field like this spontaneously and without any tools of your own and quickly pick up a few as a souvenir. By the way, it's best to cut sunflowers in the morning. Like all daisy-roses, they are still saturated with water then and therefore last the longest. Caution: Never leave sunflowers unwrapped in your car, as the sun and heat will dry them out quickly.
