A gardening year with children – experiencing nature through the ages

The garden is a silent companion throughout the year – and with children, it becomes a living storyteller. Each season brings its own magic, its own colors, smells, and sounds. Walking through the garden with children allows you to experience the cycle of nature in a very special way: mindfully, curiously, and with wonder. And along the way, the little ones learn how everything is connected – sowing, growing, decay, and return.

Spring – When life awakens

When the first buds appear and the earth slowly regains its fragrance, a new chapter begins in the garden. Children experience spring as a time of new beginnings. Together, they plant the first seeds in the ground, marvel at tender seedlings, and watch the return of bees and butterflies. Birdhouses are hung, spring wreaths are made from natural materials, and with every ray of sunshine, joy grows. Cress in egg cartons, flower bulbs in pots, or a small bed of seed tapes are also easy ways to introduce children to gardening in a playful way.

Summer – Everything grows, everything lives

Summer is colorful and lush—a true paradise for children. There's buzzing and humming everywhere, berries can be picked straight from the bush, and zucchini grow almost overnight. The days are long and full of possibilities: watering holes are set up for animals, insect hotels are filled, barefoot gardening is practiced, and flowers are collected for later drying. Harvesting is also a highlight now—hand-picked tomatoes, cucumbers, or a small bouquet of marigolds represent true gardening happiness. And if you look closely, you might spot a grasshopper, a butterfly, or even a sleeping bee among the lavender.

Autumn – gathering, marveling, letting go

In autumn, the garden reveals itself in warm colors and fading tones. It is the time of harvest baskets, the rustling of leaves, and little farewells. Children collect leaves of all colors, make works of art from them, learn what can be made from chestnuts and acorns, and watch as the garden slowly settles into its resting place. The last apples are picked, and perhaps seeds are harvested and dried to be sown again next year. Building shelters for hedgehogs or wrapping up delicate plants together can also become a loving ritual. Autumn is full of little rituals—a gentle transition.

Winter – Experience the silence of the garden

Winter brings peace. But even now there is much to discover in the garden – just quieter, slower, more hidden. Children can look for animal tracks in the snow, make ice candles from water and leaves, or make bird food with their parents. A walk through the frost-covered garden shows how beautiful silence can be. Perhaps the children can decorate a small wishing tree in which they can collect wishes for the coming gardening year. Watching the birds at their feeding station or reading gardening books by candlelight are also part of the fun now – the garden lives on, even when it is asleep.

Conclusion: Through the seasons in the garden, not only plants grow – but also memories

A garden is a place of change—and for children, a living classroom full of wonder. Those who walk through the seasons with them not only show them nature, but also growth and decay, patience and hope, cycles and new beginnings. It's not the grand experiences, but the quiet, recurring moments that leave a lasting impression on our hearts. And so, with each month, not only the garden grows, but also a piece of our shared life.
