Cushion aster (Aster dumosus)

This versatile all-rounder is especially popular with perennial enthusiasts due to its wide range of colors and varieties. Belonging to the daisy family, this perennial species is particularly well-suited for low-maintenance natural gardens. It is also highly sought after by insects, butterflies, and bees. The aster is considered the last sign of summer in the garden, delighting gardeners well into autumn and is even slug-resistant. In short, it's a plant that's indispensable for every type of garden.

Growth form

A fast-growing, compact perennial; 20-50 cm tall; pointed-oval, dark green, serrated leaves (4-6 cm long). This perennial spreads vigorously, forming mats of propagation material. Even the smallest rootstocks reliably develop into new plants. This makes the aster a popular barter item among garden neighbors.

blossom

The flowering period of this "herald of autumn" extends from August to October. The 2-5 cm flowers resemble daisies. Their yellow center is framed by radial, elongated petals. The wide color palette of asters will delight any perennial lover. It ranges from white through all shades of purple and blue to pink and a vibrant purple.

Location requirements

Cushion asters prefer a sunny to partially shaded location with nutrient-rich, permeable soil. The soil should be sufficiently moist, but never completely wet. Six to eight plants are needed per square meter.

Care

Every two years after flowering, asters should be divided and replanted. This also helps prevent powdery mildew, a disease very common among asters. This disease generally only occurs when conditions are too shady or humid for the asters. So, if the site's requirements are met, there shouldn't be any problems.

Other species/varieties

Recommended varieties of Aster dumosus include the pink-flowering 'Herbstgruß vom Bresserhof', which blooms from August to September and, at a height of 50 cm, provides a beautiful color effect in your home flowerbed. The vigorous 'Apollo', which grows to approximately 40 cm in height, is also a great choice for your garden, as it initially blooms white and fades to a delicate pink as it fades.
