Snapdragon (Antirrhinum) – Care, flowering time & location at a glance

The Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus ) are a true classic among summer flowers – colorful, charming, and uncomplicated. With their playful, "snappy" blossoms in pink, red, yellow, or white, they bring life to beds, balconies, or pots. Children are particularly amazed by the snappy flower shape – the name says it all. Whether as a low, compact variety or as a stately bedding plant up to 90 cm tall, snapdragons are versatile, easy to care for, and delight us with a long flowering period from June through autumn. Snapdragon – Plant profile

blossom

Snapdragons bear lip-like flowers in an impressive array of colors: pink, yellow, white, and red are common. When the flowers are squeezed sideways, they open like a small snapdragon—hence the name.

flowering time

From June to September – with regular care, snapdragons often bloom well into autumn.

growth

There are compact, low-growing varieties (20–30 cm), ideal for window boxes and pots, as well as tall varieties with sturdy stems that reach up to 90 cm. These are particularly suitable for beds and borders.

leaves

The leaves of the snapdragon are narrow, oval, and bright green. Some varieties also have a decorative yellow marbling.

Location

Sunny to partially shaded locations are ideal. Low-growing varieties thrive
Excellent in pots or window boxes. Taller varieties are recommended for large-scale plantings in perennial beds – their vibrant colors create impressive accents in the garden.

Care

Snapdragons are easy to care for and don't have any special soil requirements. Regular watering and occasional fertilization promote healthy growth. Taller varieties sometimes require support. Regularly prune dead flowers to encourage the plant to bloom again for a long time.
