Raised bed – harvest happiness at a high level

Are you planning to open a salad bar or vegetable counter where gardening and harvesting is easy on the back? Then a raised bed is the ideal solution. "Gardening at a high level" is very much in vogue.

A place in the sun

The most important prerequisites are a sunny location and sufficient grass clippings, which are plentiful now in spring. While in the past, a classic raised bed was created, modeled on medieval monastery gardens, stacked without any side structures, over time this evolved into the raised bed in a box. And this is gaining increasing popularity among young and old alike. No wonder, since you don't necessarily need a garden for it. The large planter box can also be placed on the terrace or in the backyard of a townhouse.

Bring wood!

For a raised bed, you first need an outer structure, which is then filled with various layers of organic material. For the walls, untreated wooden planks and boards are suitable, depending on your preference; you can also use them to construct a simple frame yourself. Larch or oak wood is best because it is extremely weatherproof and durable. Note: With a wooden structure, the interior walls should be lined with pond liner to prevent contact with the rotting material.

Basics

Orient the bed north-south to maximize sunlight. It's important to cover the base of the raised bed with fine-mesh wire mesh if it's in contact with the garden soil; this will keep out unwanted guests like rodents. On sealed surfaces, a base must be built in addition to the frame. The bed shouldn't be too high, between 80 and 120 cm. And don't choose a base that's too wide, so the bed is easily accessible from all sides. As a rule of thumb, no more than two arm lengths; however, the length is optional; it's more a matter of space!

The right filling makes the difference

The fill becomes increasingly finer from bottom to top; each layer, except for the green intermediate layer, should be approximately 25-30 cm thick. The bed fill must be completely renewed every 5-6 years. The organic material will then have completely decomposed. Otherwise, it is sufficient to add compost and humus soil as needed with each new planting in spring.

Layer by layer

Wood/shrub layer:The bottom layer, the base, consists of loosely stacked, shredded branches, twigs, stems, and coarse wood chips. This layer ensures adequate ventilation.

Green intermediate layer:This is followed by a thin, approximately 10 cm thick layer of fine green waste and mixed, soft garden waste, which is firmly tamped down. This prevents any material stacked on top from trickling down.

Compost layer:Next, garden soil is mixed with immature, coarse compost, straw, and old leaves. This mixture brings warmth into the raised bed and initiates the decomposition of the lower layers.

Humus layer:The final layer is a layer of finely crumbled, ideally sieved, topsoil with mature compost, i.e., humus-rich soil. This layer provides the plants with everything they need for a good start and continued growth. This creates the best conditions for a bountiful harvest in the first year.

By the way:You won't have to share your space at the salad bar with uninvited guests; a very pleasant side effect is that the voracious snails usually shy away from the steep climb into the raised bed!
