The optimal time for sowing columbine seeds indoors is early March, as their germination time is about six weeks. Due to their uneven germination, it's recommended to sow a few more seeds. Columbines are light germinators, so the seeds should be lightly covered or not covered at all with soil during pre-growth.
Columbines are also cold-germinating plants and require cold temperatures to emerge from their dormant period. If you plan to sow in spring, you should store the seeds in the refrigerator at approximately 4 degrees Celsius for about four weeks before planting them in the ground. We recommend pre-growing them in pots. Once established, the columbine is frost-hardy and will reliably return every year. The columbine is slightly poisonous!
