Bee-friendly perennials: autumn anemone, yarrow, scented nettle & Co.
If you love a vibrant garden or balcony, opt for a colorful mix of bee-friendly and long-blooming perennials. Especially in late summer, many plants once again display their full splendor – and their blossoms attract a variety of bees, bumblebees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
Whether delicate autumn anemone, robust yarrow, elegant masterwort, aromatic scented nettle or nostalgic hollyhocks – they all not only offer real added value for the animal world, but also beautify any flowerbed or balcony.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
Yarrow is a typical plant for native, natural gardens and is a great bee-friendly plant. Its flat flower umbrellas are a magnet for butterflies, bumblebees, and bees from around mid-June to the end of August. This vigorous plant thrives in sunny locations with sandy soil and thrives even in fairly dry conditions. Yarrow is available in many pretty and vibrant colors such as white, yellow, rose, pink, or violet. Depending on the variety, it grows to about 15 to 50 cm tall and has a faint chamomile scent.

Autumn anemones (Anemone hupehensis)
Autumn anemones are perfect late bloomers for gardens and balcony plantings. The white, rose, or violet varieties with single, semi-double, or double flowers look particularly beautiful among grasses. From August onwards, the flowers provide a great landing spot for bees and bumblebees. However, they only provide pollen, not nectar. Depending on the variety, autumn anemones reach heights of around 60 to 120 cm. They prefer loose, humus-rich, and not too heavy soil. If the flowers are regularly cut back, some varieties such as 'Honorine Jobert' or 'Wirbelwind' reliably produce new flowers until November. Autumn anemones tend to naturalize, so they reproduce well in the right location.
Great Masterwort (Astrantia major)
Large masterworts are also beautiful bee-friendly plants. The delicate blossoms are a magical eye-catcher in the garden, delighting bees and bumblebees. The small, flowering umbel of this wild perennial is framed by robust bracts. With their white, pink, purple, or red flowers, they attract bees, bumblebees, and butterflies from June well into September. They prefer partially shaded to sunny locations with nutrient-rich, evenly moist soil. Depending on the variety, masterworts grow 50 to 80 cm tall.
Fragrant nettle (Agastache)
From June to October, scented nettles display their purple, white, or pink flowers, which attract bees and other beneficial garden visitors in droves. They thrive in a sunny to full sun and warm location with humus-rich, well-drained, and not too moist soil. Depending on the variety, they can grow up to 160 cm tall. However, there are also significantly smaller varieties, reaching around 40 cm in height. The aromatic scent emanating from the flowers and leaves is particularly characteristic. Scented nettles ideally reproduce by self-seeding.
