Atmospheric DIY idea: Advent wreath with 24 candles as an Advent calendar

Light by light through Advent – this special DIY Advent wreath combines the symbolism of candlelight with the anticipation of an Advent calendar. Instead of just four candles like a classic wreath, 24 small tea lights glow in decorated jars – one for each day until Christmas. Each jar is lovingly numbered and adorned with bows or ribbons, arranged on a moss wreath. A simple yet impressive idea that not only provides warmth but also invites you to pause and enjoy. Ideal for anyone who wants to spend the Advent season mindfully and creatively.

Material:

  • Straw blank for the wreath (Ø 40 cm or 60 cm)
  • Cardboard (diameter like straw blank)
  • moss
  • 12 or 24 different small jam jars
  • 12 or 24 tea lights
  • Decorative tapes and ribbons (both in different colors and patterns)
  • 12 or 24 small labels
  • Pencil
  • cutter
  • Wire staples
  • Binding wire
  • Scissors
  • felt-tip pen
  • hot glue
  • sewing needle
  • white thread

Crafting instructions:

For a wreath with a diameter of 60 cm, you'll need 24 candles; for a wreath with a diameter of 40 cm—like this one—12 candles are sufficient. Place the blank on the cardboard and trace the outer and inner edges onto the cardboard with a pencil. Cut out the ring with a cutter.

Place the cardboard ring on the straw blank. Place wire staples in the center of the cardboard ring and pierce them all the way through to the blank. It's best to pierce a staple every 10 cm to ensure the cardboard ring stays in place.

Use staples to secure the moss to the cardboard ring and the blank until the wreath is covered. Leave a small gap in the cardboard ring to ensure the jars will stand level.

Apply some hot glue to the outside of a glass jar base, push the moss aside, and place the jar on the cardboard ring. Hold it in place until the glue dries. Once all the jars are arranged, cover the bottoms of the jars with moss to prevent the cardboard from showing through.

Cover the aluminum rim of the tea lights with decorative tape and place the lights in the glasses.

Now it's time to add some color: Tie a ribbon around each glass rim. Alternate patterns and colors.

Use a felt-tip pen to write the numbers 1 to 12 or 24 on the labels. Thread the twine through the labels with a needle and tie it to the ribbon. The number sequence is irregular, just like an Advent calendar.
