Jewel basket (Cosmos bipinnatus)

Some of you may also know Cosmos. They fill the garden with a pretty interplay of various shades of pink and purple, contrasting beautifully with the green of their leaves. These annuals are ideal cut flowers and have a very long shelf life. If you already have phlox or delphiniums planted in your garden, add Cosmos; these plants complement each other perfectly!

Flowering time:

June to September

Location:

Sunny to partially shaded locations are optimal; it's well-suited for perennial beds and borders. The soil should be well-drained and nutrient-rich. It's best to lightly enrich it with humus before planting.

Care:

Fertilize regularly, but not excessively, as otherwise the plants will become too top-heavy and easily bend. Tall plants need support. To encourage new blooms, regularly remove dead flowers. Be careful not to let the soil become too dry. It doesn't tolerate frost and is therefore not winter hardy.

Reproduction:

Seeds can be sown directly outdoors or planted in May. They can be started early in March, ideally on a windowsill.
