Sowing on the windowsill

Plants need plenty of light to thrive. With plant lights, you can start growing them on your windowsill even during the darker months.

Sufficient light is important

In February, the days are still very short, and the natural light isn't yet sufficient for growing tomatoes, chilies, peppers, lettuce, herbs, or even mushrooms. If plants are kept in too little light, the vegetables not only grow poorly, they also become leggy. This means that the seedlings put their energy into growing taller and reaching for the light. The result is soft, flexible stems and poor foliage and root growth.

How to turn your windowsill into an indoor mini garden

Thanks to plant lights that promote plant growth, you can start pre-cultivation now on your windowsill or in a low-temperature greenhouse, or you can grow aromatic herbs and fresh vegetables year-round. Don't sow them too densely, otherwise the little plants will later get in each other's way and grow poorly. Feel free to leave the plants under the lights for a while: Because they hang horizontally above the plants and a reflector directs the light downwards, they grow beautifully upright rather than at an angle to the window.

Extend the day with suitable lamps

The lights mimic the sun's rays and provide the young plants with light and warmth, helping them germinate and thrive. Fluorescent tubes and LED lights are available for this purpose, with light colors tailored to the plant's spectrum. LED lights also consume less energy and last longer. The light stimulates the plants' growth and improves photosynthesis. You can also place heating mats under the plant containers. These provide constant heat, helping the seeds germinate better and the cuttings root faster.

Even more care tips for the indoor garden

And, of course, the plants also need to be watered regularly. During the heating season, it can also be helpful to spray the growing plants with water. It's best to always water from below, so the plants develop stronger roots. A small garden on the windowsill will also provide a splash of green color in your home after just a few days.
