Sweet potato tower
Sweet potatoes are delicious and healthy! These are two excellent reasons to grow them in your own garden. Even with limited space, anyone can create the necessary space for this popular crop. All you need are a few simple materials for the sweet potato tower.

Sweet potatoes, also called sweet potatoes, originate from South America like potatoes. However, they are only distantly related to them and look more similar to our bindweed. To thicken their roots, sweet potatoes need a large volume of soil with plenty of nutrients. After planting, leaf growth will slow until the roots have taken over the soil volume. After that, the vines will grow rapidly. The vines of a sweet potato do not hold themselves in place, which is why they can either be kept as a hanging plant or trained with string – in the garden, the vines will quickly cover the ground. Sweet potatoes should be fed with liquid fertilizer every three weeks. They can then be harvested in late September or early October, at the latest when the first frost stops the leaves from growing. They are then stored indoors for about a week at 25 to 27°C and 85% humidity to convert starch into sugar.

Materials & tools:
1 sleeping mat
6 bamboo sticks
fleece 70 x 70 cm
small bag
expanded clay
approx. 2 x 30 l soil
6 safety pins
cords
2 sweet potatoes (pre-grown young plants)
Scissors
large pot
Here's how:
1. Sun and warmth are particularly abundant on balconies and terraces. These are the ideal location for sweet potatoes! These exotic plants, with their attractive leaves, require a lot of warmth and therefore feel right at home on a sleeping mat.
2. Bring the ends of the sleeping pad to the center and pin them together with three safety pins. Turn the pad over and repeat the process.
3. Cut the top of the soil bag cleanly open for reuse. To accommodate drainage, first empty the soil into a large pot. Fill the empty soil bag with approximately 5 cm of expanded clay for drainage. Then place the bag inside the sleeping mat roll and insert a piece of fleece as a separating layer. Now return the soil to the bag. Repeat the process for the second sleeping mat roll.
4. You can plant the sweet potatoes after the Ice Saints at the earliest. However, it's best to plant them in June, as these vegetables are very demanding in terms of temperature. Add the three bamboo canes for support and tie them together at the top with string.
5. Tie the growing vines to the stakes regularly. It's best to guide the vines upward in a spiral, as they can grow up to 2 meters long.
6. Homegrown sweet potatoes can be harvested at the end of September. There are numerous delicious recipes, as the tuber can be used in so many different ways.
